Telework Eligible: No. Overview The U.S. Mission in Mexico is seeking a qualified Consular Agent to provide emergency and routine consular services in San Miguel de Allende. The Consular Agent will protect U.S. citizens’ interests, supervise local staff, coordinate with key community partners, manage crises, and maintain communication with the supervisory post in Mexico City. Responsibilities The Consular Agent is responsible for: Protecting and assisting U.S. citizens in the assigned area. Supervising one or more full- or part‑time locally employed Consular Assistants. Setting regular business hours and being on call for emergencies and crises. Building working relationships with local law enforcement, immigration, hospitals, prisons, media, and government officials. Providing on‑site assistance during crises such as natural disasters, terrorist incidents, or other emergencies. Performing emergency services including: visiting U.S. citizens in hospitals or prisons, assisting destitute citizens, and conducting welfare checks. Providing routine consular services such as passport issuance, consular reports of birth abroad, and consular reports of death abroad. Qualifications and Requirements Education: Two years of university studies (50% of credits) or a college certificate. Experience: At least two years of customer service experience or two years in U.S. government service. Languages: Fluent in English and Spanish (tested). Must self‑certify proficiency in the ERA system; optional language test scores may be submitted. Skills & Abilities: Excellent office skills (filing, organization, customer service), Level II typing (40 wpm); basic computer literacy with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work under pressure; problem‑solving with limited supervision; good judgment; customer‑service orientation. Must obtain and hold a public trust security clearance; subject to background investigation and pre‑employment medical exam. Valid Mexican driver’s license required; permitted travel within Guanajuato State and to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. Must be available for irregular schedule, after‑hours duty, and telework up to 100% of time if needed. Must be able to begin work within four weeks of agency authorization and/or clearances. Benefits The pay plan is assigned upon offer and is based on a minimum number of hours each biweekly period. Additional benefits are determined by the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs.
